Volvo has announced that the sales of its vehicles equipped with systems for automatic braking passed the one-million mark, with more than 130,000 sold in the U.S.

Volvo’s technology for automatic braking features many world firsts: “City Safety,” which works at up to 31 mph, collision warning with full auto brake, and pedestrian and cyclist detection with full auto brake. According to a 2012 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) survey of 500 U.S. Volvo owners, a majority of them liked their vehicle’s crash avoidance features and credit the technology for keeping them safe and preventing crashes.

Volvo is bolstering its safety features for its 2014 model lineup including new technologies that will debut in the all-new XC90 in late 2014. Those systems include pedestrian detection in the dark, road edge and barrier detection with steer assist, and adaptive cruise control with steering assistance.

“Several recent reports state that our groundbreaking auto braking technologies help reduce the risk of being involved in a rear-end accident by more than 20 percent. One million Volvos with auto brake on the roads take us toward our aim that nobody should be killed or suffer serious injuries in a new Volvo car by the year 2020,” Volvo senior safety advisor Thomas Broberg said.
